Advanced Surface Ablation is a progressive form of Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK). With Advanced Surface Ablation, anesthetic eye drops are applied to eye and the outer surface of the cornea, called the epithelium, is gently removed with a softening agent. Once this top layer has been removed the excimer laser reshapes the cornea providing clear vision.
Advanced Surface Ablation takes approximately twenty minute s to complete and is painless. After the treatment, you will wear a soft contact lens to protect the cornea while the epithelium regenerates itself. This contact lens will stay in place for one week and does not require daily care. At your post-op visit, the contact lens will be removed by your surgeon.
Many patients notice better vision immediately after surgery, but it is normal for your vision to fluctuate during the first week after surgery. Once the epithelium has healed, many patients feel comfortable to return to work. This takes approximately one week.
Dry eye is the main side effect of Advanced Surface Ablation. Pre-operative testing will determine your level of eye dryness. Most patients will be given a prescription for eye drops to resolve any dryness after surgery. This dryness is only temporary and can last from two weeks to three months. You may also require over-the-counter eye drops after surgery. Drops to prevent inflammation and infection will be prescribed as well.
For some patients, Advanced Surface Ablation is safer than LASIK due to the shape and thickness of the cornea. Pre-operative testing will help your surgeon decide which procedure is best for you.
